StarCoach2016: Get Ready to Run!

That's right, we are less than a week away from hitting the road! Just a couple rehearsals left and a handful of things left to do on our tour prep list, and then we're off!

One of the big projects I've been working on is my new EP, Run, set to release this Friday. For over two years this EP has been marinating in it juices. Since its conception, I've been signed to AndromiDen Recordings, replaced songs, written new songs, grown so much as an artist, and promised its release more times than I'd like to admit.

But now it's really happening. Run is actually going to be released! This Friday! Just in time for the Stardust & Stagecoach Tour! And to celebrate, I'm letting you peep the album cover early.

Now listen to "Leap" and get excited. ;)

StarCoach2016: Rachel

First, a rough schedule of dates (more are on their way!):

Second, ONE week until we hit the road and I feel like I haven't properly introduced myself! Let me remedy that...

What's your name?
- Rachel Oto

What instrument do you play on this tour?
 - My voice and guitar

What other instruments can you play?
-...I'm decent at snapping, stomping and hand-clapping...And I can plink on a piano.

When and why did you start playing your instrument?
- I've been singing since I was five. I started guitar when I was 10 and found my mom's old acoustic guitar in my parents' closet. And by "started" I mean that I would lay the guitar down on a stool (in its cardboard box, no less) and would play various combinations of out of tune open strings. Not long after that, my parents bought me an electric guitar for Christmas and enrolled me in lessons.

What other bands/groups/ensembles are you a part of?
- Currently, my solo project is my only project.

Have you been on tour before?
- Nope.

Name one thing you have to take on the road with you?
-Hard to say right now, but I feel like I'm going to have to take my phone with me

Are you more Stardust or Stagecoach?
- Stagecoach! I have a fair amount of Stardust in me, but when I hit the stage, I'm Stagecoach all the way!

Would you have survived a cross country trip in a stagecoach?
- Yes. I would be rather irritable by the end of it, but I would survive.

Given the opportunity, would you leave Earth? The solar system? The galaxy?
-I don't think I would leave Earth. Or the solar system. Or the galaxy. Maybe I would change my mind at some point, but right now I feel like my place is here on Earth.

What are you most looking forward to on this tour?
- Playing shows with the band! I have waited to do this for so long!

StarCoach2016: Amber Lynn

Before I get into today's band highlight, just a note, our Indiegogo campaign is in its final days! Five days, to be exact. This is your last chance to pre-order a copy of my upcoming EP, request a postcard from the road, book us for a house party, and help us make it up the coast and back home! Check it out: https://igg.me/at/starcoach2016/x/13730743

Now, for the fun part of the post...It is with great pleasure that I introduce our expressive, soulful and groovy bassist, Amber!

What's your name?
-Amber Lynn Torres

What instrument do you play on this tour?
 - Bass

What other instruments can you play?
- I play guitar. I dabble on the keys. I play...harmonica.

When and why did you start playing your instrument?
- well...

What other bands/groups/ensembles are you a part of?
- I do have my own solo stuff. Right now it's under "Amber Lynn".

Have you been on tour before?
-I have not.

Name one thing you have to take on the road with you?
-Chocolate milk...?

Are you more Stardust or Stagecoach?
-I'd say I'm more Stagecoach and less Stardust-y. [Breaks out in a Stagecoach-inspired shuffle.]

Would you have survived a cross country trip in a stagecoach?
-Likely...Not likely...Maybe. I don't know, I haven't done it yet!

Given the opportunity, would you leave Earth? The solar system? The galaxy?
-[Earth?] Oh, man...I kind of would, because I see myself as a lone ranger. [Solar System?] Yeah, why not? [Galaxy?] Yeah, and be well-traveled if I have the opportunity.

What are you most looking forward to on this tour?
- I'm looking forward to just being together with everybody, creating music and sharing it with people, instead of my day-to-day job. And traveling! Going places! Getting out of California!

StarCoach2016: What They Told Me

This Indiegogo campaigning deal is tough business! They told me it was going to be difficult from Day 1, but I really had no idea. We are currently mid-fundraiser and to be honest, we still have so much more work to do.

It would be easy to get disheartened--especially when thinking about the minimum amount of money we need to simply put gas in the tank and pay our musicians, and seeing how far we are from even that--but any time I hear those doubts start to murmur in my head there's another voice that laughs. This is the type of adversity that all your songs are about,  it says.

And it's true. So, here we are, only nine days left in our campaign with more than half our funds still needed to be raised, and this Monday I am determined to keep pushing until the end. No one said taking the leap would be easy.

...

I can't end my post on a shaky, indeterminate note. A GIGANTIC thank you to everyone who has contributed, shared, sent love to our campaign so far!!! We truly do appreciate every single bit of your support--it's what is getting us up the coast (AND back)!

For those of you who would like to support our tour, you can contribute below:

And for those of you who could use a little Monday motivation yourself, here's a fun video of "What They Told Me" that Julia took of me:

StarCoach2016: JV

So, you know that I'll be going on tour this May with Julia Fairlight. You know how you can contribute/pre-order my EP/book a house concert with us. You know that rehearsals are underway. I think it's time to get personal and introduce you to the talented musicians who will be my family on this tour!

We'll start with our impeccable, impressive and imperturbable guitarist!

What's your name?
- JV Vidopio

What instrument do you play on this tour?
 - Guitar

What other instruments can you play?
- Piano, bass, I can program music

When and why did you start playing your instrument?
-I started playing guitar when I was six and a half years old. When I first learned how to read music, my mother sent me to Conservatory, when I seven.

What other bands/groups/ensembles are you a part of?
- The Letters Home, Push Phonic, Hypodive

Have you been on tour before?
- Yes

Name one thing you have to take on the road with you?
-My credit card.

Are you more Stardust or Stagecoach?
-I think I'm a mix. I think you have to have both.

Would you have survived a cross country trip in a stagecoach?
- Yeah, definitely. Absolutely.

Given the opportunity, would you leave Earth? The solar system? The galaxy?
-I wouldn't. I still have a mission here to accomplish and if I'm not done, I don't want to leave earth. So, definitely not.

What are you most looking forward to on this tour?
- I'm looking forward to touching people and changing people one person at a time. Not "touching" like that! If they're in a bad mood and if they have had a terrible day, I think we really have a chance to change people with the music.

Stay tuned for more from the band and other behind the scenes looks at the Stardust & Stagecoach Tour!

StarCoach2016: Rehearsal!

Rehearsals for the Stardust & Stagecoach Tour are in full swing and honestly, they're one of my favorite activities to go to all week! The last time I had a band was when I was in high school, and after years of doing the solo singer-songwriter thing, it's really exciting to be working with a group of extremely talented musicians.

I'll be introducing and highlighting each of my band members in the coming weeks, but for now, here's a little taste of what it's like at Stardust & Stagecoach rehearsal. (P.S. It tastes like berry shortcake.)

StarCoach Update: Fundraising

We're just over a month away from heading out on The Stardust & Stagecoach Tour, and the preparations are in full swing. Rehearsals are rocking, booking is coming in, and merch is on its way, but the biggest development right now is that Julia and I have started our very own Indiegogo campaign!

As artists on a small label, we are given lots of support in terms of recording, booking and artist development. We get one-on-one attention and amazing opportunities to grow as musicians and as people. However, due to the size of the label, we aren't always able to get the financial backing we need to completely fund our projects.

Both Julia and I want our first tour to be a smashing success, which is why we are so excited to announce our fundraising campaign and get you involved in making The Stardust & Stagecoach Tour the most glorious first tour the West Coast has ever seen!

Every little bit helps--every $5 is gas in the tank--and is very much appreciated. And if contributing money is a just out of reach right now, don't worry about it! You can still help us out by sharing our campaign with your friends and family, and even sending us love and support.

Oh! And don't forget to check out the perks! Our campaign is currently the only way to pre-order my upcoming EP Run!

StarCoach2016 - Episode 2: Dog Days of Planning

It takes a lot of work to get a tour off the ground--booking, making content for social media, fundraising, contacting media outlets, rehearsing, etc.--so it's always helps to have an awesome team working with you!

Another great thing is being able to double dip and use a planning meeting as social media content (which might convince you to help us out financially ;) ). As promised, the scrupulous documentation of Julia Fairlight and me going on tour continues in this second installment of what I think I'll start calling, at least colloquially, the StarCoach Logs. Enjoy!

It's Alive!!!

If you haven't taken a listen, here's your opportunity!

"Leap" is the first single off of my first EP, Run, scheduled to release this Spring. It is also my first track with AndromiDen Recordings and consequently, the first track of mine that I have not self-produced/tracked/mixed.

Honestly, I was a little nervous going into the process, but I am happy I did. The results are so much closer to the song that would play in my head than any of the recordings I created.

So, here's to taking leaps of all types. May your drive to get to the other side always outweigh your fear of falling.

Fire Maintenance

Sometimes I feel like I'm being constantly distracted from my purpose, but this weekend held bits of inspiration and little reminders to remember my goals (I guess watching Rocky will do that to a person...) so I thought I should remind myself

There it is.

So for now, my first single is getting ready to drop (with the rest of the EP close behind), there are some super exciting secret plans brewing that I'll reveal when the time is right, and there's this piece of video evidence that I'm still out here doing my thing:

Eye of the tiger, baby.

The Artist's Life I

Oh, thoughts...

The things that a person enjoys doing don't always make money or enough money to be comfortable. For many people that's enough of a deterrent to stop them from chasing their passions. Society has been set up so that you believe if you conform, follow the rules, stay on the path, you will be, most likely, alright. Even comfortable.

But "comfortable" isn't always fulfilling.

How many songs can you write when you come home from work exhausted? How many landscapes can you paint?

How do you let inspiration flow if you need to go to bed by a certain time so you can wake up by a certain time so that you get to work on time? How do you perfect your craft when you have so little time to simply feel human?

You can do it. I've seen it be done, people who work all day at 9-to-5 jobs and then go out and play shows, but it's not easy. Or, it's not easy for some of us.

But you have to eat. You have to have a place to sleep. There are responsibilities that you have simply by deciding to live in a society--there are lines that you are expected to follow.

The question on a personal level seems to be a question of balance. For many, a work to play ratio. You must work, or at least have income, so you can physically survive, but you must create so you can spiritually survive.

So...Where is the balance? Is there actually a point where things balance? Or is this a myth that we force ourselves to live through?

I'll let you know when I know...

Delays & Difficulties

So much growing to do

Despite valiant efforts to have the EP out by Valentine's Day, we are pushing the release until...well, until the music is ready. Expect the first single to drop on February 29 (a fitting day for the song that will be released).

Honestly, sometimes I get frustrated with the rate at which I work. I'll go into the studio thinking that I'll be able to quickly pump out a bunch of quality vocal takes and instead, I leave feeling like I can't sing at all and that anyone who has ever told me otherwise was straight up lying to me.

Yes, studio work is different than performing live. Yes, this is my first project done outside of my bedroom. Yes, this is how you learn, but goodness gracious, I never knew learning could be so painful or make me so thoroughly question a part of me that I thought I knew so well.

Yet, even as I write this I can hear a little voice in my head saying, "But it's going to be worth it."

I hope it's worth it...

It'll be worth it. There's no way it's not going to be worth it. Already, I can hear improvements when I play shows. Less strain, more body, different, subtler ways of expressing emotion. I know I'm making progress...but, s**t, I can't wait until this EP is done! Maybe then my confidence will feel more valid.

Onward

A Fresh Start

And, we're back! This time for real, I promise, and with more support and more experience on my side. Since the last post, I have teamed up with AndromiDen Recordings, an incredible boutique recording studio in Pasadena, to work on my first EP, Run, set to release...soon. (The first single drops next month!)

In addition to spending a good amount of time in the studio learning how to sound good in a recording, I have also been keeping busy hosting a monthly acoustic night in Hollywood, and learning how to be a business woman (if you want to see more on that, check out Renewable Blooms...). So, yes. Lots of learning. Lots of doing. Lots of growing.

At some point, I'll dive into what happened over the missing months and pull out lessons and morals, but for now, it's just good to be back moving in the right direction.

Onward!
