Feature and Future

In keeping with my search to understand how stories from the past affect my present, I had the opportunity to speak with my grandparents recently and hear some of their stories.

My grandparents are Japanese American. When they were young, America entered into World War II and they, along with their families and over 100,000 other people of Japanese ancestry, were placed in "relocation camps" to ensure that they weren't acting as spies for Japan. I had heard the narrative before, but I hadn't previously heard very much from my grandparents on the topic.

My grandma insists that she doesn't have many stories from her time at the camps. She was 12 when they got the notice to leave. My grandpa, who was 15 at the time they evacuated, told me a lot about the structure of the camps but gave only glimpses into his personal experience...

I still have to sift through my conversations with my grandparents (they let me record them), and organize my thoughts, but more on this to come!

And few pieces of news...

I'm featured in Art Muzeo Magazine's debut issue! I will also be playing the release party on Saturday, February 4

Additionally, I will be playing an acoustic show with Poeina at Backyard Coffee Co. in Redwood City, CA, on February 18. Time yet to be announced, but it's going to be a fun night!

Stories Are How We Know

I love stories. I love how they connect seemingly random instances and characters. I love how you can translate them into different languages and come to similar conclusions (for the most part). I love how they can make things seem to make sense both in the world of the story and in the physical realm we inhabit. I love them. I love listening to them, I love writing them, I love digging into them and learning from them.

It thus seemed to make sense, after years of directionless posting to this blog and social media, to provide myself with something of a story line this year and give myself some purpose and artistic direction. So, after much reflection, I am dedicating 2017 to stories, or more specifically

How stories from the past affect the present

And maybe just to keep things focused, I'll really be looking at

How stories from the past affect my present

Now don't worry, I'm not about to write academic essays instead of blog posts and songs, but I will be thinking about this prompt as I write, tour, post, interact with people, and in general move through the year.

And in case you forgot which song this post title is referencing, here you go 😉:

This Year

I've always loved making New Year's Resolutions, but to be honest, I'm not always the best at keeping them (if the inconsistency of my blogging is any indication). Yet here we are at the beginning of another year, and here I am again. But this year the goals are the stars and I really can't wait to reach them with you!

This year expect:
  • More shows and tour dates
  • New music
  • Exciting projects
  • Cool new merch
And I will do my very best to keep this site updated. (But if for some reason something happens, you should also be following "ROtoSings" on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter!)
